Abomination of Desolation

If you have read about the Tribulation Period or the Second Coming of Christ, you probably have heard about the Abomination of Desolation. It refers to an event that will happen in the Jewish Temple that is still going to be built. What is going to happen in this Temple that is so bad that it is called the Abomination of Desolation?

The Reading of Daniel 11:31

Daniel 11:31 (NKJV) “And forces shall be mustered by him (the anti-Christ), and they shall defile the sanctuary fortress; then they shall take away the daily sacrifices, and place there the abomination of desolation.”

This is what Daniel 9:27 says will happen in the middle of the Tribulation Period. This means that the Jewish Temple will have been built and that sacrifices will have already been instituted. But the anti-Christ will break the covenant that he had made with the Israelites and will enter the Temple to defile it.

It seems strange that a world ruler will take the time to defile a Temple of the Jews. However, keep in mind that there is more and more evidence that the anti-Christ will come out of the Muslim world. And there is nothing more important to a radical Muslim than to destroy anything that is sacred to a Jew.

Can The Temple Be Built?

Many say that it can never be built because it must be built exactly where the Muslim Dome of the Rock is standing. However, there is more and more evidence emerging that the original Temple actually was built, not where the Dome of the Rock now stands, but off to the side. In fact, three Rabbis have stated that they have found the missing Ark of the Covenant and that it is hidden underground some distance from the Dome of the Rock.

An even stronger piece of evidence is that the Bible states that the Temple will be rebuilt. In fact, how can the anti-Christ defile the Temple if it is not rebuilt? Yes, the Temple will be rebuilt and it will be done very quickly.

Preparations Are Already Done

Reports coming out of Israel indicate that everything is ready to rebuild the Temple. The stones for the Temple have already been cut. And the furnishings have already been made. In fact, men are already being trained for the duties that must be performed in the Temple. If you want to read more about this, read my article “The Rebuilding of the Temple.”

When Will This Happen?

The Bible does not tell us when this new Temple will be built. However, we can make some pretty good guesses.

We know that the anti-Christ will make a Covenant with Israel. This means that a leader from the Muslim world has gained enough power that he can take this bold step. This will not sit well with radical Muslims. But God says that it will happen, so we know it will happen.

Think about this. There is a lot of unrest in the Middle East. There is a great threat of war that could destroy much of the Muslin world. What greater opportunity for a radical Muslim leader than to propose peace between the opposing forces. We already know that Israel will jump at any proposal of peace.

Also what would be a greater symbol of peace than to allow the Jews to build their Temple on the Temple mount, without destroying the Dome of the Rock? No, radical Muslims will not like this, but the anti-Christ knows what he is doing.

The anti-Christ’s Plan

Yes, the anti-Christ knows that he can put the world off their guard if he can show that he wants to establish peace in the Middle East. However, 3 ½ years after he makes this peace gesture, he will make his move. And that move is spelled out in Daniel 11:31. He will enter Jerusalem with his forces and shut down the Temple.

He will stop the daily sacrifices and shut the Jews off from their Temple. But Daniel says he will do much more than this. He will defile the Temple. Exactly how he will do this is not known. But Daniel calls it the Abomination of Desolation. Daniel 11:31 (NKJV): “And forces shall be mustered by him (the anti-Christ), and they shall defile the sanctuary fortress; then they shall take away the daily sacrifices, and place there the abomination of desolation.”

The Hebrew word translated “abomination” is “shiqquwts” which means “disgusting, filthy, idolatrous, detestable”. In other words, it will be something so disgusting and anti-God that it will destroy and make the Temple desolate. No Jew will want to enter it after this action.

How Can He Do This?

We know that the anti-Christ will be controlled by Satan. However, because of the influence of Christians (who are filled with the Holy Spirit), Satan is restrained from unleashing his whole fury against the world. Remember, God gave the world to the human beings that he created (us). What happens in the world is determined by us. Spirit filled Christians are the ones who have brought the Holy Spirit into the world and thus, restrained Satan and what he wants to do.

However, when the rapture occurs and all of the Spirit-filled Christians are removed from this world, the Holy Spirit will have no one to dwell in and so He will no longer be in the world to restrain Satan. (See 2 Thess. 2:7.) Thus, Satan will be free, through his anti-Christ, to unleash his full fury on the world.

The Result of the anti-Christ’s Actions

Daniel 11:33-35 indicates that his actions will cause warfare and destruction to break out. Many will die, but many will turn to God for their salvation.

This will embolden the anti-Christ. Daniel 11:36-44 indicates that his actions will cause a great war. The King of the South and the King of the North will both come against him. We do not know which governments these two Kings represent, but you can be assured that it will result in a great world war.

However, Daniel 11: 42-43 indicates that the King of the South is probably Egypt because he overthrows and destroys Egypt. But the King of the North will still be powerful and will continue to threaten the anti-Christ. There is also a threat from the east.

The anti-Christ Is Destroyed

Daniel 11:40-45 indicates that a great war will occur in the Middle East. It will also involve armies from the north and from the east. Many have asked: “Where is America in all this?” There is no passage in the Bible that indicates any country such as America that comes from across the ocean. Thus, we have no idea where America is in all this.

It is because of America that Israel became a nation. The movement to create the new Israelite nation began with a massive prayer program in American Churches, which resulted in America initiating the movement to create the new Israelite nation.

However, since the Abomination of Desolation probably takes place after the Rapture, born-again Christians who are taken out of the world in the Rapture will not be concerned about what happens to America. Will you be taken out of the world when the Rapture happens?
