Are We Basically Good Or Evil?

The debate for years has been: “Are we basically good or basically evil? Are we born basically good, only to have our environment corrupt us? Or are we born with an evil spiritual defect that no amount of good environment can cure?

The Millennium Answers This Debate

If just look at the Millennium, we have our answer to this debate. The Millennium proves that we are not born basically good. Look at what happens at the end of the Millennium. Everyone has lived in an environment that is free from corrupting influences, free from war, free from hate, etc. People have lived all these years in a perfect environment.

Yet, Revelation 20 tells us that at the end of that thousand year period, there will be a great rebellion. They will rebel against Jesus and His Kingdom.

Rev. 20:7-9 (NIV): “When the thousand years are over, Satan will be released from his prison and will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth–Gog and Magog–to gather them for battle. In number they are like the sand on the seashore. They marched across the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of God’s people, the city he loves.”

This Is A Large Rebellion

Notice that this is not just a few people. Notice verse 8 says that their number is like the sand on the seashore. This is a huge number of people. Verse 8 also says that they come from the four corners of the earth.

In other words, there are countless numbers of people who have been wanting to rebel against the rule of Jesus, but until the end of the thousand years, they have not had the courage to do so.

Where Does This Courage Come From?

Revelation 20:7 tells us. Rev. 20:7 (NIV): “When the thousand years are over, Satan will be released from his prison.” All they need to begin their rebellion is a leader that has the courage to fight against Jesus, The King of kings.

Notice that these rebels will all be relatively young people. Remember Isaiah 65:20 where it talks about how long people will live during the Millennium? It says that sinners will not live to be over 100 years old.

And yet, there will be so many of them that they cannot be counted. And all they needed was a leader to cause them to openly show their rebellion. And that leader is Satan, himself.

The Rebellion Does Not Last Long

Notice the last half of Rev. 20:8 (NIV): “But fire came down from heaven and devoured them.” There will be no last great battle, no gathering of one army against another. The rebellion will be swiftly put down by Jesus, Himself.

Somehow, Satan convinces these rebels that they can defeat the King of kings, the Lord of lords. This passage shows that sinful people simply do not think. They have closed minds. They are unwilling to listen to reason. They have their minds made up and no amount of facts are going to change it. Does this remind you of any people living today?

Notice What Happens To Satan

Rev. 20:10 (NIV): “And the devil (Satan), who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.” Satan will be forever removed from the presence of God where he will be tormented for ever.

Notice What Happens To Those Who Followed Satan

The truth is that we are either going to be following Jesus or we will be (either knowingly or unknowingly) following Satan. There is no other choice. And notice what happens to those who are following Satan. Rev. 20:15 (NIV) says: “If anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.”

Only those who have consciously given their heart and life to Jesus will have their name written in the Book of Life. Is your name written in that book?

Rebels Do Not Want To Hear The Truth

Remember what Jesus said in John 14:6 (NIV): “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’”

If we are not willing to listen to the Truth, we will never know the Truth. If we shut our minds to facts, we will never know what the Truth actually is.

Do you know people who have their mind so made up that they are not willing to even listen to another point of view? They are not even willing to listen to any facts, especially undeniable ones. Their mind is made up and no one is going to change it.

Perhaps you have been one of these who have a closed mind. Are you not even curious about what others, especially Christians, think? Is your life so perfect that there is no room for change?

Rebels Lose

Take a moment and think about all those countless rebels at the end of the Millennium that are deceived by Satan and think that they can defeat Jesus. Then look at what happens to them. Could it possibly be that the Bible is correct? That the Bible is revealing the Truth to us?
