Christianity and the Old Testament

Has God warned us about the evil that is in the world? Has He given us knowledge of what to avoid? Yes, He certainly has and it is mostly found in the Old Testament. I know, many say that the Old Testament does not apply to New Testament Christians. But think about this. Why did God make sure that the Old Testament, the Hebrew Bible, was included in our Holy Bible? Was it just for historical information, or was it for a more important reason?

Salvation Comes Through Jesus

As Christians, our salvation is not determined by what we do but by whom we believe in. We are saved by simply giving our heart and life to the authority of Jesus. We do not need the law for our salvation.

In fact, Galatians 2:16 (NKJV) says that we know “that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.”

Again, God tells us in Romans 10:4 (NKJV): “For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.” And again in Romans 10:9 (NKJV): “if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” This verse tells us all we need to know to receive salvation.

So why do we need the Old Testament? We are saved through Jesus Christ. What more is there? While we are living here on the earth, there is much more. Satan and his demons are alive and well here on the earth and they have determined it is their mission to keep everyone that they can from going to paradise (heaven). They are very devious, and if we are not very careful, they will lead us into their trap.

This is why we need the Old Testament. God gave the law to the Hebrews to try to protect them from demonic activity that would lead them away from Him. The same is true today for Christians.

The Old Testament Is a Guidebook

The Old Testament is not a book of law for Christians; it is a guidebook to keep us from falling into Satan’s traps. Just because we have accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior, does not mean that Satan has given up on us. No! In fact, it has made us a target in his eyes. He knows that if he can lead us down the wrong path, he can get us to renounce Jesus and we will belong to him once again.

The Old Testament is a guidebook, not a book of laws that we must follow. In fact there are many passages that are specific to the Hebrew nation that do not apply to those who are not Jews. However, there are also many, many passages that everyone needs to take heed to so that we will not fall into Satan’s many traps.

Can Satan Get You Back?

In this light, the Old Testament is extremely important for Christians. Just remember, when you became a Christian, it has made Satan and his demons extremely angry. He knows that you are no longer under his authority and you will not end up in Hell with him. So you are now a target for him. He wants you back.

How can he get you back under his authority? He can do this by leading you down the wrong path so that eventually you will renounce Jesus and start living as he wants you to live. “But,” you say, “I am now a Christian, Satan has no more authority over me.” Yes, that is true. But, if he can get you to believe that certain things of the world are more fun and even more important to you, he can and will lead you back to be under his control.

Once Saved, Always Saved

Those that say “Once saved, always saved” simply do not know that they are talking about. Remember Jesus looks at our heart. If we have changed our mind and have determined in our heart that we really do not need God anymore, we will loose our salvation.

Think about this. Paradise is for those who want to live with God and according to His plan for their lives. Only those who have this desire will ever enter paradise. What if you decide that you no longer want to follow God and His plan for your life? What if you have decided in your heart that the things of this world and more fun and desirable for you. What if you have decided that you really do not need God any more? Do you honestly believe that you will go to paradise to live with a God that you no longer want to be a part of your life?

God will honor your desires. He created you as a free creature. You are free to determine your own destiny. Just because, at one time you determined that you wanted what God has to offer you, that you have set your destiny in concrete. No, you are still a free creature. If you change your mind and determine that you really do not want what God has to offer you any more, God will honor that decision and He will not force you to live in a place that you have rejected.

So listen. If you die while you are rejecting God and His plan for you, God will honor your wishes. He will not bring you into the paradise that you have rejected. What happens then? There is only one place left for you to go, and that is where God is not, the place God prepared for Satan and his angels, that is, Hell.

Is the Old Testament Important For Christians?

The answer is a definite, Yes! It is full of warnings about the traps that Satan has prepared. It is full of the temptations that Satan throws at people. If you think that since you are a Christian, you are not capable of falling for the traps that Satan will set for you, you are sadly mistaken.

If everyone recognized the result of engaging in sin, no one would ever participate in it. So why do people participate in sinful acts? Think about it. We commit sinful acts because they are enjoyable, they are fun! Yes, the fun is only temporary. It only lasts for a short time. But we participate because we are only thinking about what we want right now. We are forgetting about what may happen in the future.

This is how Satan gets us to sin against God. He gets us to limit our thinking to only what is happening right now. In a way, he puts blinders on us.

This is why the Old Testament is important for Christians. If we are aware of the traps that Satan has for us, we will stay away from them. This was the purpose of the Old Testament law.

As Christians, we need to know God’s law. Why? Because by knowing the law, we will be aware of the traps that Satan has for us. Because the law is in our mind, our thinking will not only be on what is happening right now, but what can and probably will happen in the future. When we are tempted to engage in a sinful act because we see it as something pleasant and fun, we will immediately see far beyond the present and see the end result of participating in that activity.
