Created In The Image Of God

Who are we as human beings? How are we different from the animals around us? Or are we different from them? Many believe that we are just a higher order of animals. In other words, we are no different from all the animals that we see. However, our Bible tells us a very different story. Our Bible tells us that we are created separately and differently than all the animals that God created.

We Are Created In God’s Image

The very first book of the Bible tells us this. Genesis 1:26 (NIV): “Then God said, ‘Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.’”

An “image” is a representation or replica of one person or thing by another. An image is something that is similar, with the same properties, but not necessarily identical.

The “likeness” of a person or thing means that one person resembles or models another. This is how God made us, to model or resemble God, Himself.

We Were Given One Command To Fulfill

God created us as an image of Himself. We are not little gods, but when someone looks at us they should see who God is. However, God gave us only one command to fulfill. Genesis 1:28 (NIV): “God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.’”

God put us in charge of everything else that He had created. We are to take care of everything and use what He created for whatever we need.

God Puts a Limit On Us

If we are made in the image of God, then we must have the same freedom to do and to be whatever we want, just as God does. One big difference is that we do not live in the spiritual world; we are limited by the physical environment in which we live.

Other than our physical environment, God only limits us in one way. We are personally responsible to God for what we do with our freedom.

However, one other thing has restricted our freedom and that is sin. Because of this, we often find that it is very difficult to exercise our freedom within the spiritual world. This is why we so often cannot receive the blessings of God, such as healing. Sin blinds us to what is possible for us.

When the human race was first created, we were given only one restriction: Genesis 2:16-17 (NIV): “And the Lord God commanded the man, ‘You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.’”

What We Lost In The Fall

God knew that if we knew what evil was, that is the ability to live outside the presence and influence of God, we would be tempted to experience it. And that is exactly what happened. Adam and Eve gained this knowledge of evil and it separated them spiritually from the presence of God. We call this “the Fall.”

In “the Fall,” we did not lose the image of God, but we did lose being in the “likeness” of God. We are told this in Genesis 9, which is an event that happened after the Fall. Genesis 9:6 (NIV): “Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man.”

We did not lose the abilities that God created us with. We still had the ability to create. We still had the ability to determine our own future. We still had the ability to love. What we lost was the ability to do these things perfectly.

We Lost Our Desire To Live With God

When Adam and Eve were first created, they looked forward to meeting with God each evening. After they disobeyed, they hid from God instead of wanting to meet with Him. They felt alienated from God because they no longer reflected God’s image.

They now had the knowledge of evil in them and thus did not resemble God because God has no evil in Him. Thus, they no longer resembled or modeled God on the earth. They had become a new or different creature than what God had created.

We lost the desire to love and have fellowship with God. We did not lose the ability, just the desire. This is why, throughout the Old Testament, it constantly says to “Seek the Lord.” God even gives this promise in Deut. 4:29 (NIV): “But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you look for him with all your heart and with all your soul.”

We Lost Our Spiritual Life

God warned Adam and Eve what would happen if they ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Genesis 2:17 (NIV): “but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.” Most people look at this and think “physical death.” And that certainly did not happen, at least not immediately.

However, God did not mean physical death, but rather spiritual death. He meant that they would be spiritually separated from God. And that is exactly what happened. They no longer had the desire to love and have fellowship with God.

I Cor. 2:14 (NIV) explains this to us. “The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.”

This is why that, even today, those who have not accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior have a very hard time accepting the spiritual truths of the Bible. They are spiritually dead and thus have no desire to love or have fellowship with God. This is why evangelism is so very important. We must awaken that desire in people so that they will reach out and desire the fellowship and love of God through Jesus Christ.

God Provided a Remedy

However, God did not give up on His creation, He reached out to us in love. Listen to Romans 5:8 (NIV) “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Also listen to the most well-known verse in the Bible. John 3:16 (NIV):” For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” This is why Jesus came to the earth, to bring back to us the eternal life that we lost. Before Jesus, people had to gain eternal life through continual sacrifices.

Jesus came to offer the final and perfect sacrifice for sin (rebellion against God). Isaiah 53:5 (NIV): “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.”

We Can Regain What Was Lost

I John 5:12-13: “He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.”

We can regain our likeness to God simply by accepting Jesus as our Lord and Savior. When we do this, He bestows upon us what was lost in the Fall. We can have that wonderful relationship of love and fellowship with God that will last for all eternity.

The Choice Is Yours

But the choice is still yours and yours alone. No one is forcing you to live with God. However, your eternal future depends upon your choice. You can either choose to live with God or live without God.

However, keep this very important fact in mind. The choice that you make while you are living on this earth will stay with you for all eternity. If you now choose to live without God while you are alive on this earth, your destiny will be to live outside the presence of God for all eternity. What is your choice?
