Creation in the Bible

There are two creation stories in the Bible. At first glance, they seem to be two different stories about God’s creation. This has lead many to believe that these were written by men coming from two different sources. Many even believe that they contradict each other.

The truth is that they complement each other. It takes information from both to fully understand the purpose of the creation. They are not from two different sources, but rather from one source to give us the full story of the creation. In fact, most scholars believe that they were written by Moses.

The First Creation Story

The first creation story is contained in Genesis 1:1 through 2:3. This tells us about the seven “days” of creation and what was created on each “day.” There has been much speculation on whether this means 7 24 hour days or simply 7 periods of time. Does it really matter which is true? God exists outside of time and how He created everything is not really important. This story simply tells us that God created all that we have.

The first creation story simply tells us that God created all that we can see and understand. It did not happen by chance but God Himself created it in an orderly way.

This first creation story tells us that God created the universe and then decided to create human beings. We were created distinctly separately from the rest of the creation.

After He had created everything else, God said Genesis 1:26 (NIV): “’Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.’ So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.”

Why did God create us a male and female? This story simply tells us that it was for the purpose of reproduction. Genesis 1:28 (NIV): “God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it.’”

We are not just another animal that God created. We were created to rule over and take care of God’s creation.

Importance Of Each Creation Story

The second creation story is found in Genesis 2:4-2:25. Just as the first creation story tells us that it was God that created all that we have, this second creation story tells us that God created the human race in a very special way.

While the first creation story tells us that God created the human race in His own image, the second creation story tells us exactly how He created us and why He created us as He did.

The Second Creation Story

God created Adam, the first human being, but God discovered that this man needed a companion on the earth. Adam was created in God’s image, that is, he had the desire to love and be loved. The problem was that Adam was a physical being, not just a spiritual being like God is. Thus, he needed another physical companion.

Notice that God did not created another creature exactly like Adam. Rather, he took part of what was in Adam and created another physical being to complement him. This is the meaning of taking a rib from Adam to create Eve. But notice what God then said in Genesis 2:24 (NIV): “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.”

Adam and Eve were not complete apart from each other, but united, they became one flesh and were complete.

Why God Created the Human Race

There is more to our creation than just those two creation stories. However, it takes a study of the rest of the Bible to understand it.

As we study the Bible, we discover that God is first and foremost a God of love. He is so full of love that He wants to share it. He had already created the angels. However, the angels were created as servants. They were created to do his bidding. They were not created to think on their own.

Servants can be commanded to do loving things, but they cannot love. To have the ability to love, you must also have the ability to not love, or even to hate. To have the ability to love, you must be a free creature with the ability to think on your own. In other words, you must have the ability to choose your own destiny. The angels were not created with this ability.

We Were Created As Free Creatures

That is why God created us as free creatures. We were given abilities that the angels did not have. We were created with the ability to create our own destiny. We were created to do and to be anything we wanted. We were created with the ability to be able to even rebel against God. God took this great chance so that He would have someone with whom He could have fellowship and with whom He could freely share His love.

Yes, we are free to do and to be whatever we want, as long as we are here on the earth. The question is often asked: “why there is so much evil in the world?” The answer is very simple. People who are free to choose their own destiny have chosen to rebel against their Creator and do their own thing.

However, there is one very important thing that we must remember. God created heaven for His children, that is, for those why want to love and fellowship with Him. Heaven is for those who choose to accept God as their Father and live according to His rules. We are here on this earth to choose whether we want to live as God created us to live or choose to live another way. But only those who want to live as God created them to live will get to heaven when they leave this earth.

God created a very simple way for us to show Him that we want to live as He wants us to. All we have to do is to accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. As we accept Jesus as our Savior and make Him the Lord of our life, we will be granted entrance to an eternal life in heaven with God.
