Islam And Christianity

Why is it that Muslims and Christians do not understand each other? Why do most people believe that they are two very different religions? The reason is that Christians do not take the time to understand what the Koran actually teaches. Also Muslims only understand what Christianity is by looking at the society that we live in. We need to find out what the similarities between the two are.

The Koran Teaching About Christians

The Koran does teach some very good things about Christians. In fact, the Koran teaches that there are actually three kinds of Christians.

The first is called “Ahl Al Kitab.” These are “the people of the Book.” These are Christians that believe in and follow the teachings of the Bible. In fact, the Koran teaches that these Christians “are the nearest in love” to believers (Muslims).

The Koran even says that true Christians are to be considered as close friends to Muslims. [5.82] “you will certainly find the nearest in friendship to those who believe (to be) those who say: We are Christians; this is because there are priests and monks among them and because they do not behave proudly.”

The second type of Christians are called “Al Kouffar” or “the “Kafiroun.” These are people that call themselves Christians but do not really believe everything that the Bible teaches, nor do they follow what the Bible says.

These are people who just call themselves Christians but do not actually live as the Bible teaches. They go to church on Sunday, but live their lives during the week no differently than non-Christians. Muslims would place many “Liberal Christians” in this category. Sadly, many “born again” Christians also live this way.

The third type of Christians are called “Al Moushrikoun.” These are those who call themselves “Christians” but associate God with other deities. In other words, they believe that other religions are just as important as Christianity. They often incorporate the beliefs of other religions into their “Christianity.” This is actually what many “Liberal Christians” do.

The problem is that the Imams are teaching that these second two types are the only type of Christians there are and thus Christians are not “people of the Book.” This is why radical Muslims are calling for the destruction of all Christians. They do not recognize that “Ahl al Kitab” (people of the Book, e.g. Real Christians) even exist.

Do Not Convert Muslims To Christianity

This may seem like blasphemy to Christians. But if you want to bring salvation to a Muslim, you need to realize several things.

First of all, to a Muslim, Christianity is a religion and a religion is a set of rules that need to be followed. I know, you are saying that this is not right. However, look at almost all denominations, churches and other Christian groups and you will find that they have a set of rules or rituals that they say need to be followed.

Many of these groups say that to be a Christian, you need to read your Bible every day, attend at least one, if not more, worship services every week, pray before your meals, etc. Others add other rules such as, no smoking, no drinking, no musical instruments, etc.

Muslims already have a multitude of rules and rituals to follow. When they look at Christianity, they see no difference except that Christians do not worship Allah. So what do we have to offer them?

When you talk to a Muslim, don’t even talk about Christianity or becoming a Christian. That is not what being a true Christian is all about anyway. Being a Christian is developing a saving relationship with Jesus Christ, not removing one label (Muslim) and adding another one (Christian). Labels are not what will get us into heaven, being a follower of Jesus is.

Islam Is More Than A Religion

There is one huge problem with asking a Muslim to become a Christian. You see, to a Muslim, Islam is much more than just a religion. Islam is a religion, a community, a language, a nation, customs, a way of living, breathing, marrying, eating, dressing, worshipping, governing, breathing, etc.

Thus, when you try to get a Muslim to become a Christian, in his mind, you are asking him to give up everything that is meaningful to him. You are asking him to change his culture. It is true that when some Muslims accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior, they do give up the culture that they were brought up in. But this is not necessary for a saving relationship with Jesus Christ.

Millions of people all around the world have become followers of Jesus without giving up the culture they were brought up in. They only thing that they must give up is their belief in other gods. Becoming a follower of Jesus means that they accept only one God and that is through Jesus.

Remember, once a person has accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and accepted the presence of the Holy Spirit into their lives, the Holy Spirit will teach them what they need to know. Remember what John 14:26 (NIV) says: “But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”

Don’t be concerned about changing how a Muslim lives when he accepts Jesus into his life. Just pray for him and allow the Holy Spirit to work in his life. You will have plenty of time to witness new things to him as he continues to ask you questions.

In fact, read I Cor. 7:17-24. It is trying to tell us not to give up who we are when we accept Jesus as our Savior. I Cor. 7:20 (NIV) sums it up when it says: “Each one should remain in the situation which he was in when God called him.”

Following Jesus Is Not Accepting a Religion

Many who call themselves Christians believe that they have accepted a religion. This is taught by many Christian groups to the extent that they will not accept others as Christians unless they follow their own way of life, e.g. their own religion.

Actually, this is why Muslims refuse to accept the belief of Christians. They see Christians as a diverse group of people that are each creating their own “religion” from the Bible. They want no part of this.

Thus, we need to teach that Christianity is not a religion, but rather a way of life. It is a way of life that is centered on following Jesus and on living by the teachings of the Bible.

Before we can get Muslims to accept Jesus into their life, we need to first make sure that we have accepted Jesus into our own life and have made following Him our first priority. You do not have to be baptized (the thief on the Cross wasn’t baptized), you don’t have to join a certain church, you don’t have to commit to any type of ritual, etc. All you have to do is to accept Jesus into your life and commit to following Him in all that you do.

The Holy Spirit Will Guide Them

Yes, I do believe in all of those things. In fact, if you do not become a part of a group of believers, you will find it very easy to drift away from your commitment to Jesus. You will soon find that you are not following Jesus as you said you would. You see, Satan has very devious ways of leading us away from Jesus if we are not connected to other followers of Jesus. We need the fellowship of other followers of Jesus.

Remember Hebrews 10:25 (NIV): “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another–and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

And yes, Baptism is important. Through Baptism, we are making a public commitment to God, to ourself, and to others, that we are committed to following Jesus for the rest of our life. However, keep in mind that it is the Holy Spirit who will convict a new Christian into receiving Baptism, this is not your job. All you need to do is to help a new convert to understand what Baptism is.

Also, do not force a Muslim who has accepted Jesus into their life into joining a church organization. Allow the Holy Spirit to work in their life. Just keep meeting with them (if you can) and answering their questions and keeping them in your prayers. The Holy Spirit will do all the rest.

What Should You Do?

It is your job to guide a new follower of Jesus. (Notice that I did not say a new Christian.) Become their friend. Show them through how you live that you are a true follower of Jesus. Discuss the Bible with them by answering their questions. Remember, every new follower of Jesus needs to fellowship with other followers of Jesus. Stay with them, at least until they associate themselves with a group of born-again Christians.
