Our Spirit Must Be Reborn

Why does the Bible say that we must be born again? Is there something that is dead within us that must be made alive? When Adam and Eve sinned, the spirit that God had breathed into them died, that is, became separated from God. Since like produces like, every descendent of theirs from then on were born with a dead spirit that must be made alive.

The Story Begins In The Garden Of Eden

God gave us a story in Genesis that helps us to understand why we need to renew, or make alive, our spirit. Yes, God breaths into our physical body, a spirit that comes directly from Him. This is explained to us in Genesis 2:7 (NIV): “the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being (living soul).”

This is what makes us different from all of the animals that God created. God put a living spirit within us, a spirit that would never cease to exist. Thus, we became a uniquely different creature than any of the previously created animals.

Then God gave Adam a commandment that none of the animals had to obey. He was not to eat of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. God created us as free creatures and He knew if we had the knowledge of evil, that is the possibility of living outside the presence of God, it would tempt us to explore that experience.

God also knew that bringing evil into our life would separate us from Him. Why? Because evil cannot be in the presence of God.

Thus, God told Adam and Eve in Genesis 2:17 (NIV): “but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.” The death that God referred to was not a physical death (although that was included, they would now physically die sometime in the future), but rather a spiritual death. Remember, spiritual death means “separation from God” and spiritual life means “connected with God.”

Adam & Eve Killed Our Spirit

When Adam and Eve ate of this tree, their spirit died within them. That is, their spirit was separated from God. That is why they hid from God when He appeared to them in the Garden. They knew that they had disobeyed God and now felt separated from Him.

And since we produce other creatures exactly like us, all of their children (and everyone since) is born with a dead spirit. In other words, a spirit that is separated from God. This spirit will still exist forever, it is just now separated from God.

If you do not understand this, think about this. When two horses mate, they do not product a goat or a sheep. No, they produce another horse. This is true with any two animals that mate. They can only reproduce their own kind.

Adam and Eve killed their own spirits. That is, when they gained the knowledge of evil, they separated their spirit from the Spirit of God. God cannot remain in the presence of evil. And since we can only reproduce others exactly like us, all of their descendants were created with a spirit that was separated from God.

Do Not Blame Adam and Eve

Our spirit is dead, not just because of what Adam and Eve did but because of what each of us has done. Remember what Romans 3:23 (NIV) says: “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” We are each responsible for our own sin.

Yes, we each are born with a spirit that is separated from God, but we are not held responsible for that condition until we reach the age of accountability. This is when we become conscious of the difference between right and wrong, good and evil. When we choose to live apart from God, we have chosen evil over good and we become responsible for our dead spirit.

If we die before we reach this point in our life (i.e. children), we are taken directly into heaven. God does not hold us responsible for someone else’s sin. Thus, children who are not yet responsible for themselves, have their spirit made alive by God, Himself, and taken directly into His presence when they die.

However, because of what Adam and Eve did, we must make a choice when we reach the age of accountability. We choose to either follow God or to reject His presence in our life.

God has just made it very simple to make this choice. All we have to do is to accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. We simply accept the fact that He died in our place for our sins.

God’s Truth Seems Like Foolishness

Multitudes of people reject this simple fact that Jesus died for our sins because it does not make any sense to them. Why? The Bible tells us why.

I Cor. 2:14 (NIV): “The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.”

The word “discerned” comes from a Greek word that simply means “able to understand.” In other words, unless you have the Holy Spirit living in you, you will not be able to understand the ideas that come from God.

Perhaps the Living Bible puts it the best when it says in I Cor. 2:14 (Living Bible): “But the man who isn’t a Christian can’t understand and can’t accept these thoughts from God, which the Holy Spirit teaches us. They sound foolish to him because only those who have the Holy Spirit within them can understand what the Holy Spirit means. Others just can’t take it in.”

Our Spirit Can Be Reborn (Made Alive)

How do we receive the Holy Spirit so our own spirit can be made alive? The Bible tells us and makes it very clear. Look at John 3:5-7 (NIV): “Jesus answered, ‘I tell you the truth, no one can enter thekingdomofGodunless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’”

To be born of water refers to our physical birth. To be born of the Spirit refers to receiving Jesus as our Lord and Savior. When this happens, the Holy Spirit gives life to our own spirit. To be born again makes us a whole person again, just like God originally intended for us.

This is what the Bible calls the “new birth.” Our spirit is brought to life and connected with God. When this happens, we are able to understand the ideas from God. They begin to make sense to us. What was formally nonsense to us will now begin to make sense. How can this happen?

When we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit comes and lives within us. When we have the Holy Spirit living within us, He helps us to understand the ideas that come from God.

The Choice Is Yours

If you have reached the age of accountability, you have a choice to make. God will not force eternal life upon you. He will not force you to live with Him. He will not force you to live in harmony with Him. God created you with the freedom to make that choice for yourself.

If you decide that you want to live with, and in harmony with God, then you need to make that choice right now. Remember, if you die without consciously making the choice to live with God, you will live forever outside the presence of God. If this happens, the only place for you to spend eternity is in the place we call Hell.

If you want to make that choice, go to How To Live Forever and learn how to make that choice.
