Receiving God’s Blessings

How can I receive God’s blessing on my life? Many people have asked this question. We all want God’s blessing on our life. Yet, most of us are not willing to do what is necessary to bring about that blessing. Too often we simply think that because we are “good” people, God should bless us so nothing bad will happen to us.

Can Nothing Bad Ever Happen To Us?

Too often we believe that because we are Christians, nothing bad should ever happen to us. The problem with this belief is that we currently live in a very evil world. There is evil all around us and that includes people who live evil lives. There are even multitudes of people who actually hate Christians.

Does this sound like an environment where nothing bad can never happen to us? Well, why doesn’t God just miraculously protect His people? If this would happen, multitudes of people would accept Jesus simply because they wanted to be protected. However, their attitude toward Christians or even how they wanted to live would not change. How would that stop bad things from happening to us? And what would heaven be like if heaven were full of these types of people?

Let’s face the facts. As long as we live in this evil world, bad things will happen and they will happen to Christians as well as non-Christians. Remember what Jesus said in John 16:33 (NKJV): “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

What Good Will God’s Blessing Do?

This is a question that many people ask. But before you start blaming God for bad things happening to you, remember this. God created us as free creatures. We are free to do whatever we want to do. This includes being free to follow wherever God wants to lead us. If we will simply learn to listen for and follow God’s leading, we will be blessed. And if possible, God will lead us out of danger.

So, here is the answer. If it is at all possible (in the circumstance in which we are living), God will lead us away from trouble and danger. Yes, sometimes, God will perform a miracle. But most of the time, He relies on us to listen to Him and follow His directions. Remember, God created us as free creatures. He will never take that freedom away from us, even to save us from danger.

There is another point to ponder. Sometimes God allows bad things to happen to His people so that His kingdom can be expanded. Look at what happened to Paul. It was because of all the troubles, and even his execution that he went through that he was able to spread the Gospel throughout the Roman empire. If fact, if it wasn’t for Paul demonstrating how to react through all these tribulations, we probably would not have the Gospel that we have today.

How Do We Receive God’s Blessing?

The simple answer is to obey God. How do we do this? God has provided the answer for us in His Holy Bible. When Moses was telling the Israelites how they were to live when they entered the Promised Land, he told them God’s promise. It is the same promise that God gives to us.

Deut. 28:2 (NKJV): “And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the Lord your God:”

How do we obey the voice of the Lord? Psalm 24:4-5 tells us the answer. Psalm 24:4-5 (NKJV): “He who has clean hands and a pure heart, Who has not lifted up his soul to an idol, Nor sworn deceitfully. He shall receive blessing from the Lord, And righteousness from the God of his salvation.”

“But,” you say, “I have never worshipped an idol.” We may not have a physical idol set up in our house, but we can still engage in idol worship. Remember this very important point.

Everything that is more important to us than worshipping and having fellowship with God is an idol to us. What is it that keeps you from spending time with God? How often do you skip a worship service because you have something more important to do? And I am not talking about your job keeping you away from a worship service. I am talking about where your heart is, what do you really want to do.

We Must Put God First In Our Lives

This is how we receive God’s blessing. This is how we learn to hear and follow God’s voice. Listen to Matthew 6:33 (NKJV): “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” These are the words of Jesus. Thus, we must ask ourselves: “Is this what my heart’s desire is?” Or are there other things that are more important to me than the kingdom of God and His righteousness?

This is God’s promise to us. Listen to Psalm 128:1 (NIV): “Blessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in his ways.” When we pattern our life after what God wants for us, He will bless us. When we are constantly aware of God’s leading and we follow it, God can, and will bless us.
