The 7 Seals of Revelation – 1

The Tribulation Period begins with the opening of the 7 Seals. Revelation 4 sets the scene with a glorious description of the Throne Room of God. I do not have room to describe it here, so take some time and read it in Revelation 4.

Revelation 5 sets the scene for the opening of the scroll with the 7 Seals. It tells us that there is only one person what is worthy to open this scroll. This is Jesus because He conquered death (separation from God) by dying on the Cross. This is explained in Revelation 5 so you need to read it to understand why Jesus could open this scroll.

If you read these 2 chapters (Revelation 4 & 5), you will be able to more clearly understand the meaning of the judgments that God imposes on the world.

The First Seal – Rev. 6:1-2

This seal introduces us to the first member of the famous “four horsemen of the Apocalypse.” Notice that he had a bow, but no arrows and he was wearing a crown. This means that this rider is a ruler. However, he does not gain his kingdom through warfare, just by showing that he is militarily strong. In other words, he is a diplomat and gains his power through diplomacy, not through war.

There can be no doubt that he is the Antichrist who comes to power through deceit and false promises. He will bring peace to the world, but that peace will not last. He will not be recognized as the Antichrist at this time.

The Second Seal – Rev. 6:3-4

This is the second horseman of the Apocalypse. Notice that he is riding on a red horse and carrying a “great sword.” Notice what else is said of this horseman. He is given the power to take peace from the world and cause people to kill each other.

How will he bring this about? This is a question that is being asked by many. In fact, even those who do not believe the Bible are asking: “What is going to happen to this world?” They ask this because they know what is now possible.

When the Soviet Union broke up, several things happened. It has been reported that many of the small nations that broke off from Russia kept the atomic bombs that were in their territories. They were very poor nations and could not maintain them so, according to various reports, they began to sell them to rogue nations. The question is: “Who has many of these weapons now?”

It has also been reported that as many as 250 suitcase-size nuclear bombs are missing from the former Soviet Union. If one of these were to be detonated in a city, it could kill up to 100,000 people and wound many more.

There is also the threat of “dirty bombs” that are suit-case size devices that can release radiation over a large area. These could also be released in cities and kill and destroy many thousands of people and make thousands more seriously ill.

The question is: “Where are all these weapons?” “Who has control of them?” Could the Antichrist use these weapons against those who oppose Him?

The Third Seal – Rev. 6:5-6

This is the third horseman of the Apocalypse. Notice that he is riding a black horse and holding a pair of scales in his hand. This horse and rider denotes two things. And these two things always follow, and are a result of, war. The black horse denotes sickness and death, and the pair of scales denotes rampant inflation.

Where does all this death come from? It could very easily be the result of the detonation of these horrible weapons I have just described. If very many of those weapons are used, there would be millions of deaths and millions more made seriously ill.

However, there is another possibility. And this could even be in addition to the above. There are plagues that are already beginning to rapidly spread throughout the world. The World Health Organization reports that cholera, dysentery and malaria are returning with a vengeance. And many of these new strains are resistant to present medications.

The World Health Organization also reports that infectious diseases are the world’s leading cause of death. They kill at least 17 million people a year. And most of these are young children.

We also know that right here in America, that there are many new diseases that are resistant to any drugs that we now have. Drug companies have not been able to develop new drugs that can destroy the new diseases. At the same time, they are doing their best to keep natural remedies, that can destroy most of these new viruses, out of the market. You can read about some of these remedies here.

There is something very interesting about the breaking of this third seal. Food necessary for survival, will be very expensive. However, notice that the oil and wine were not to be damaged. Oil and wine are the symbols of wealth. This means that only the poor are going to be affected by this inflation. There will still be plenty of wealthy people that will not be affected by this inflation.

The Fourth Seal – Rev. 6:7-8

This is the fourth horseman of the Apocalypse. This horseman is riding a pale horse. This is a colorless appearance and always symbolizes death.

This is the first horseman that had a name and his name was “Death.” And for the first time, there was something following him and the name that given to it is translated “Hell” or “Hades.” This is actual a Greek work that simply means “a place for departed souls.”

However, the most scariest prediction of this fourth seal is found in the last phrase what says: “They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.” (NIV).

Read that carefully. One fourth of the world’s population, well over a billion people, will die as a result of the opening of this seal.

All this death is a result of the war and destruction caused by the opening of the second and third seals.

There are three more seals to be opened. I will write about them in my next article.
