The Antichrist

Much has been written about the Antichrist. In fact, complete books have been written about him. But, just who is he? How will we know him? The Bible does reveal a great deal about who he is and how to recognize him. It also reveals what will happen to him after he deceives the world and causes great destruction in the world.

The Antichrist Spirit

John tells us that the antichrist spirit is a spirit that is already in the world. I John 2:18 (NIV): “Dear children, this is the last hour; and as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come. This is how we know it is the last hour.”

What is this antichrist spirit? John tells us it is a spirit that lies about the truth that God proclaims. He says in I John 2:22 (NIV): “Who is the liar? It is the man who denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a man is the antichrist–he denies the Father and the Son.”

Yes, many have declared that Jesus is not the true Son of God. This is especially true in recent times. In fact, how many people have you read about that have declared that they are the Messiah, or the savior of the world? As bad as these people were (and are) they do not hold a candle to the coming Antichrist. The spirit that was (and is) in these people just give us an idea of what the final Antichrist will be like.

The Final Antichrist

The Antichrist that the Bible reveals to us is the last world leader. He will have great influence (and probably even control) over the whole world. He will be someone that everyone will recognize as someone that is rebelling against Almighty God. The Bible says that he will have a great following. The whole world will flock to him as the savior of the world.

So, what does the Bible say about him? Actually he is called by several different names. Each one helps us to truly understand who he is and what he does.

The Son of Perdition

There are two people with this name. Judas Iscariot and the Antichrist. Judas openly revolted against Jesus and set himself against our Lord at His first advent; the Antichrist will openly revolt against Jesus and set himself against our Lord just before His second advent.

As Paul is informing us about the second coming of Jesus (the Rapture), he says in II Thess. 2:3 (NKJV): “Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition.” Here we see that the Antichrist is called “the man of sin” as well as “the son of perdition.”

The Antichrist will be exactly what his name implies. He will not only sin, but will be a person whose entire life is sin, that is, his entire life is a rebellion against God.

The Little Horn

Daniel was given the first vision of the Antichrist and he described him as the “Little Horn.” In fact, he was given information about the Little Horn in both his first vision and his second vision. God revealed to Daniel that the Antichrist would do several things. Among them are:

  • He will speak pompously and arrogantly.
  • He will persecute and “make war” against the saints of God for three and a half years.
  • He will intend to change the times and laws.
  • He will control the world’s finances.
  • He will “magnify himself above every god.”
  • He will blaspheme the true God.
  • He will put his confidence in his great military strength.
  • He will be a brutal conqueror.
  • He will eventually be destroyed and his body thrown to the flames.

The Beast

In Revelation, the Antichrist is identified as “the Beast” 34 times. Read Rev. 13:5-8 and you can get an idea as to why he is called “the Beast.”

Rev. 13:5-8 (NIV): “The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise his authority for forty-two months. He opened his mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven. He was given power to make war against the saints and to conquer them. And he was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation. All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast–all whose names have not been written in the book of life belonging to the Lamb that was slain from the creation of the world. “

He is a ruthless and controlling being that has complete control of the world. He even convinces the rulers of the world to join him in a battle against Jesus and His followers. It is no wonder that he is called “The Beast.”

Rev. 19:11-16 tells us that Jesus and the armies of heaven come down to rule the earth. Jesus is pictured as one riding a white horse. Rev. 19:19 (NIV) then says: “Then I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies gathered together to make war against the rider on the horse and his army.”

The End of The Beast

The Beast (the Antichrist) will only rule for a short time. The Bible indicates that it will only be for 3 ½ years. Yes, the Tribulation Period does last for 7 years, but the Antichrist will only be in power for the last 3 ½ years of the Tribulation Period. Then, we are told what happens to him.

Rev. 19:20 (NIV): “But the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who had performed the miraculous signs on his behalf. With these signs he had deluded those who had received the mark of the beast and worshiped his image. The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur.”

The Antichrist will have his day in the sun, but it certainly will not be worth it. However, this is what happens to people who seek power for themselves. They cannot see the end of their power. In fact, most believe that their power will never come to an end. However, as it is with all tyrants, his power will last for only a short period of time.

Jesus Christ Will Return to Rule

Yes, the Antichrist will be the last worldly ruler of the world. Multitudes will follow him right into his destruction.

But he will not be the last ruler. Jesus will return to the earth and reign fromJerusalemfor 1000 years. After this 1000 year period, all evil will be revealed and cast into the lake of fire. The only ones left will be those who have accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior.

Then God will create a new heaven and a new earth where there is no evil, no sickness, no sorrow, etc. It will be a perfect existence that will last forever. It will be the existence that God intended for His creation from the beginning. Now it is possible because the only people living are those who desperately want to live with God.
