We Can Be Like Jesus

One of the main precepts of the Bible is that we are supposed to be like Jesus. Many people have carried this too far and actually say that we can be equal with Jesus. However, they can only say this if they believe that Jesus was simply a good man and a good teacher. But the Scriptures tell us that Jesus was and is much more than this.

Jesus Became Just Like Us

Yes, Jesus became wholly human. There was only one slight difference between Him and us. We both have a created body. We both have a spirit. However, our spirit is a created spirit and the spirit of Jesus was God. Our spirit wants to fellowship with the Father, just as the spirit of Jesus did.

Did this give Jesus the power to live closer to the Father (God Almighty) than we can? No! Jesus was subject to all the temptations that came His way through His earthly body, just as we are. Hebrews 4:15 (NIV): “we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are–yet was without sin.”

This Was Necessary To Save Us From Our Sin

This was the only way that He could take our place in death. And this was necessary because as Romans 6:23 (NIV) says: “For the wages of sin is death.”

Because He became one of us, Jesus was able to take our place for the punishment of our sins. Isaiah 53:12 (NIV) says: “he poured out his life unto death, and was numbered with the transgressors. For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.”

He was able to do this because as Hebrews 4:15 (NIV) says: “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are–yet was without sin.”

Jesus Was Without Sin

Why was Jesus without sin? First, because of His miraculous birth. Mary gave birth to Him. However, His father was not another human, but rather God, Himself. Thus, original sin was not passed down to Him.

Secondly, It is because He did exactly what we need to do, allow our spirit to be led by God and then allow our spirit to lead us.

Here is the secret to living a sinless life. Jesus said: “John 5:19 (NIV): “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.”

If we would do the same thing, we too could live a sinless life, at least from this moment forward. But how many of us live this close to God?

To Live Without Sin Should Be Our Goal

As long as we live in this world, we are going to be tempted. As long as we live in this world, Satan (and his demons) are going to try to trick us into sinning against God. And unless we have all knowledge (which none of us has), we will be tricked into sinning every once in a while.

This is why 1 John 1:8 (NIV) says: “If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.” But John goes on to say in 1 John 1:9 (NIV): “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

Can We Be Perfect As Jesus Was and Is?

This should be our goal. No, not to try to be “perfect,” because that is physically impossible for us as long as we live in this world. But what we do need to do is to recognize when we do sin and ask forgiveness for it. In this way, we can be like Jesus. Remember what 1 John 1:9 says; that He will “purify us from all unrighteousness.” Do you know what this means? It means that we are made perfect in the eyes of God.

No, we will never “be made perfect” in our own eyes. We will always remember the sin that we did. However, all we need to do is to remember how God looks at us after we repent from our sins. He sees us as perfect.

How Can We Be Made Perfect?

We do this by repenting of our sins and receiving Jesus into our heart as our Lord and Savior. The process is rather simple. Click on “How To Live Forever” and find out how.
