What Is Hell Like?

Many people do not believe in a hell. They don’t believe that God would ever send anyone to such a horrible place. Yet, there is more and more evidence showing up that prove that Hell is a real place and that people are going there.

More and more people are coming forward to tell their story that they have been to hell and came back. Many people do not believe them because their stories each seem to be a little different. They say that this proves that it is just their imagination working overtime.

The Bible gives two descriptions of hell. Each describes hell a little differently. But they both describe Hell as a place of torment and loneliness.

Many Think That They Will Join All Their Friends There

It amazes me how many people actually look forward to going to Hell. They think of it as a place where all their friends will be and that it will be one big party. Some would rather go there because they think that heaven will be a boring place. If you think this, think for just a few moments about what the Bible says that Hell actually is.

Hell Is a Burning Fire

The first description is given by Jesus in Mark 9:43 (NIV): “If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where the fire never goes out.”

The word translated “Hell” is the Greek word “geenna” or “gehenna.” This word was very vivid in the minds of the people hearing this. Just outside Jerusalem was a valley called Gehenna. It was where all the refuge of the city was thrown and it was constantly on fire.

It was also the place that had previously been desecrated by the sacrifice of children to Moloch. Thus, to the Hebrews, it was an accursed place that was used for city garbage and where worms gnawed and fires constantly burned. Thus, for those who heard Jesus, it was a vivid picture of eternal punishment.

Hell Is An Everlasting Fire

In Matt. 25:31 Jesus describes Hell a little differently. He says Matthew 25:41 (NIV): “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.”

This is a fire that will last for eternity. It will never cease.

Notice one other very important point in this verse. Hell was created only the devil and his angels. It was never meant to be a place that a human would inhabit. God does not want anyone to go there.

However, remember that God created us a free creatures. We make our own choices and that includes whether we will spend eternity with God or without Him. And the only other place available for those who choose not to live with God (by accepting Jesus as their Lord and Savior) is the place prepared for the devil and his angels.

Hell Is a Dark Place

Matt. 8:12 says Matthew 8:12 (NKJV): “But the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” Here, Jesus is referring to Jews who refuse to accept that Jesus is God. Notice where they will be sent. They will be “cast into outer darkness.”

Don’t think of this as being dark, as in contrast to the light cast by the fire. Rather Jesus is trying to describe Hell as a place of terrible loneliness. They will have nobody to turn to, nobody to talk to, and they will be constantly alone.

Some say that since Hell is a burning fire (and the Bible says it is), the burning fire will make Hell bright. Remember 3 things: 1) Light comes from God. 2) God’s presence is in the world in which we temporarily live. 3) Thus, in this world fire produces light.

Hell is where God is not, so there cannot be any light there. This means that any spiritual fire that there is in Hell will not produce any light, only burning.

Hell Is a Real Place

As I mentioned earlier, in these last days, God has allowed some people to visit hell and return to tell about it. Are you willing to listen to personal experiences? I hope you are not like one of those that Jesus talked about in Luke 16:31.

A rich man had died and gone to hell. He called out to Abraham to send someone to his brothers to warn them about this place. But he was told in Luke 16:31 (NIV): “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”

Recently, the 700 Club had several people on their broadcast that have experienced hell and have returned to tell about it.

Who Will Be In Hell?

Listen to Rev. 21:8 (NIV): “But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars–their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.”

Look at this list. Notice the first category. This word refers to those who are fearful of trusting God. Those who would rather trust in themselves than trust in God. Then notice the last category, “liars.” This is translated from the Greek word “pseudes” that means “untrue, erroneous, deceitful, wicked.” In other words, it refers to those who practice deceiving people.

How Can You Escape Hell?

The only way to escape Hell is to change your mind about what is right and what is wrong. In order to do that, you must seek the author of what is right and good. And that person is God, Himself.

And God has made it simple for us to change our mind. All we have to do is to accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. In other words, we accept the fact that those who practice sin (see list above) will die (be separated from God) and be separated from God for all eternity. Then accept the fact that Jesus died in your place and all you have to do is to accept that fact and accept Jesus as your Savior

Then, accept Jesus as the Lord of your life. When you do this, you will find that you do not want to indulge in those practices listed above and instead you want to live the life that God has actually designed you for.

If you want to accept God’s great gift of salvation, go to How To Live Forever and follow what is written there.
