What Is My Purpose For Living?

Why are we on this earth? What is my purpose for living? Is there any real meaning to life? These are questions that have been asked by millions down through the ages. Is there an answer? Yes, there is.

Why Did God Create Us?

The answer is very simple. God created us for the purpose of spending eternity with Him forever. God wants someone to share His great love with Him.

But, doesn’t He have the angels for this? No, angels were created as servants. Their purpose is to serve God and to meet all His needs. Their existence helps to make heaven the wonderful place that it is.

However, God wants someone to share His great love. Servants do not have this capability. Servants can do loving things, but because their existence is to do loving things, they cannot freely love. They are not free creatures.

Thus, God decided to create another creature, one that was created in His own image. This would be a creature that had the capability to freely love. Of course, if this new creature had the capability to freely love, it would also have the capability to freely choose to not love. If this new creature had the capability to freely choose to live with God and to share His existence, it would also have the capability to freely choose to not live with God and not share His existence.

Was this a dangerous move on God’s part? Some might say Yes. Why would God create a creature that He knew would turn against Him? Why would He create a creature that He knew He would have to banish from His presence forever? God realized that, yes, that would be true. But there was no other way to create a free creature that could share His great love. On the other hand, He would do everything possible to get every person to recognize His love for them and convince them to love Him.

God Created Us As Free Beings

Look at Genesis 1:26 (NKJV): “Then God said, ’”Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.’”

This passage answers the question of why God created us. It tells us the purpose for our being on this earth. God created us in His image, according to His likeness. What does this mean? It means that (with certain limitations) we are created with the same qualities and abilities that God has.

What are these qualities? First, we are created with the ability to love. This was God’s primary purpose for creating us. Next, we are created with the ability to make our own decisions. Finally, we are not created as servants, but as free creatures with the ability to do whatever we wanted to do and thus, God does not have the right to stop us.

Yes, this was a dangerous step that God took, that is why He did place some limitations on us. For instance, we have the ability to create, but not out of nothing. We can only create using materials that the physical world in which we live provides for us.

He also created us as physical creatures, with a limited lifetime on this earth. Why did He do this? Because God wants to share His love with us for eternity. However, since love cannot be commanded but rather can only be freely given, we are given a time of probation in which we can learn to truly love.

God Created Us With The Ability To Love

God places within our hearts the craving to be loved. This is why babies only mature as human beings when they are raised in a loving atmosphere. There have been many illustrations of what happens to babies when they are not raised in a loving atmosphere. There have been instances where babies have been abandoned in the woods and raised by animals (yes, there are documented instances of this happening), they never mature as human beings. There have also been instances where babies have been raised by parents that never give them love but keep them isolated and only fed. These, also grow up without the ability to love or even relate to other human beings.

But, even though we are created with the desire to be loved, we must learn to love others. Remember, love cannot be forced; it can only be freely given. Thus, we must be taught how to love. This is why God created the family as the primary institution in His world. God designed His plan around the premise that babies would be raised in a loving family and taught by loving parents.

Thus, remember this, God created us with the ability to love. But since love can only be freely given, we all must be taught why we should love others and how to express that love.

God Wants To Share His Love With Us

So why did God create us with this desire and ability to love? Was it just to see what we would do with it? No! God put this desire and ability in us for a very specific reason. God is a God of love. Love is something that needs to be shared. Love cannot exist by itself. For love to be love, it must be given and received.

God had created the angels, but they were created as servants, Servants can be told (made) to do loving things, but they cannot be commanded to love. Love can only be freely given. Thus, God had to create a creature that was completely free, free to do what it wanted to do, free to be what it wanted to be. Thus, God created us, human beings that were completely free to do whatever we wanted to do.

Granted we were given some limitations, We can only exercise our freedom in this physical world. We can create, but only with the physical items in this physical world. We also were given only a limited time to learn to love so that we could share this love with God. God knew that if we didn’t learn to love within a certain amount of time, we would never learn to love.

God also put us in a physical world that revealed Himself everywhere we look. Yes, many never see this revelation of God, but that is not God’s fault. That is because we have allowed false teaching to creep into our existence. Why doesn’t God stop this false teaching?

Read Genesis 1:26. When God created us He said: “let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” (NKJV). If God took this authority back (which He gave to us), He would not be true to Himself.

Have you accepted God’s invitation to share His love? Have you exercised your freedom to share this love with others, as well as with God? If not, you have missed your calling. You have missed the greatest experience that you could possibly have. If not, please consider the options that God has given you.
