Who Is Jesus Christ?

Throughout the world there are many different ideas about who Jesus Christ is. Many believe that He was a good teacher, a prophet or simply a good man who lived about 2000 years ago. Even believers in Islam (Muslims) believe that Jesus was a prophet. However, the Bible reveals exactly who Jesus was and is.

A Great Teacher Teaches the Truth

The first thing that we really need to understand is that Jesus is either who He said He was or He was the greatest liar that ever lived. He is either who He said He was or we cannot accept anything that He said.

This is where so-called liberal Christians have really missed it. They claim that Jesus was a good teacher and that He taught us how we should be living. What they ignore is that He also taught that He was the Son of God and that the only way to God was through Him. He taught that salvation, that is, our ticket into heaven, was only through believing that He was and is the only, unique, Son of God.

How can He be a good teacher when He teaches lies? How can we believe anything that He teaches when He teaches things that are not true? The reality is that if He was and is a great teacher, then we must accept everything that He taught. We must realize that everything that He taught is the truth. And that includes His claim that He is the unique Son of God.

Is Jesus The Son Of God?

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus claimed over and over that He was the Son of God. As we have seen, modern liberal Christians do not accept that Jesus was actually God. However, the people who knew and heard Jesus knew exactly what He was saying and what He was teaching. In fact, that is why the rulers of the Jews wanted to kill Him.

One time, the Jews picked up stones to stone him because of what He was teaching. Jesus said in John 10:32 (NIV): “I have shown you many great miracles from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?” Notice their answer. John 10:33 (NIV): “’We are not stoning you for any of these,’ replied the Jews, ‘but for blasphemy, because you, a mere man, claim to be God.’”

If the people who lived with Jesus and heard His teaching first hand knew that Jesus claimed to be God, we have to accept their testimony. There is no denying that Jesus claimed to be God.

Jesus Claimed a Different Relationship to God

After His resurrection, Jesus made a definite distinction between His relation to Almighty God and the disciples relationship to Almighty God. Look at John 20:17 (NIV) where Jesus made the statement : “I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.”

Notice that He did not say; “I am returning to our Father and our God.” No! He made a definite distinction. Jesus has a different relationship to Almighty God than we do. Jesus is the divine “one and only” Son of God, while we are children of God because we have accepted Him as our Father and God. We are created beings. Jesus is not a created being, but rather the eternal Son of God.

God Proclaims Jesus as His Special Son

When Jesus went to John to be baptized, a very special event happened. John took Jesus down into the water to baptize Him. When He did, the heavens were opened up and Matthew 3:16 (KJV): “he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him (Jesus).”

The next verse reveals the most important part. Matthew 3:17 (NIV): “And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.’” God was proclaiming to the world that Jesus was His special Son.

One other time, God reveals to us His special relationship with Jesus. While Peter, James and John were on the mountain with Jesus, God spoke to them and once again revealed who Jesus is. Matthew 17:5 (NIV): “While he (Jesus) was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!’”

All Life Comes By and Through Jesus

All Bible scholars acknowledge that in the first chapter of John, “the Word” refers to Jesus. Look at what it says about Jesus. John 1:1-4 (NIV): “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men.”

Not only did Jesus exist before the world was created, it was Jesus who created the world and all that is in it. Genesis 1:1(NIV) says: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”  But it is John 1:3 that tells us exactly who in the Godhead that did the actually creating. It was Jesus.

It is God who gives us life, but Jesus claims to have life in Himself. In other words, He has control over His own existence. Notice what Jesus says concerning His own life. John 10:18 (NIV) “No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”

It Is Only Through Jesus That We Can Have Life.

The most famous verse in the Bible tells us this. John 3:16 (NIV): “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” It is only through Jesus that we can have life and that includes eternal life.

Then Jesus, Himself, tells us in John 5:24 (NIV):  “I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life.” We receive eternal life by believing God when He said that He sent His one and only Son to die on the cross for us.

Jesus claims to be the door or gate that we must enter through to receive salvation. John 10:9 (NIV): “I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture.” Then He adds in the next verse John 10:10 (NIV): “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
