Who Is Your Master?

This may seem like a strange question, especially here in America. We don’t think that anyone should be our master. We are in charge of our own lives. No one controls us.

We Are Programmed To Be Followers

Yet, the truth is: we are all followers. It is programmed into our DNA. Social Scientists, Psychologists, Physiatrists and many others have been proclaiming this. We are programmed to follow an ideal, an idea, a philosophy, a religion, etc. And whatever we follow will become our Master. They tell us that even self-proclaimed leaders are following something. It is usually a philosophy or a religion.

Who Or What Dictates What You Do Or Believe?

How do you make decisions in your life? What authority do you depend on? Don’t tell me: “I make my own decisions.” If you believe that, then you are being led around by an unknown force. You are actually blind as to what you are doing.

Who do you blame when you lose your job? Very few of us ever accept the blame for ourselves. We usually blame someone or something else. Do you blame God and cry out: “Why did you let this happen?” Remember, God did not cause this to happen. You or someone else did. You need to trust God to make something good happen because you lost your job.

Who do you blame when a disaster strikes? How often have you said: “God, why did you let this happen?” Don’t blame God for disasters. (At least until the Tribulation Period begins, then God will be causing disasters to happen.) You need to trust God to make something good happen for you because of the disaster.

How Do You Spend Your Time?

How do you spend your Sundays? No, Sunday is not the Sabbath, that is Saturday. But that is another subject. Where do you really want to be on Sunday? Is this your day for relaxation and recreation? Or is your day to spend time with Jesus? These are important questions you need to answer. This does not mean that if you miss church any Sunday, you will be going to hell.

However, you do need to ask yourself, what do I really want to be doing on Sunday? You see, if we constantly put other things ahead of being with Jesus, then we really cannot be a follower of Jesus.

What Does This Mean?

So, what does this mean for us? It simply means that we need to choose who or whom we are going to follow. If we don’t make a conscious choice, we will make an unconscious choice which means that we are following something or someone blindly. It means that someone or something is controlling how we are thinking and we don’t even realize it.

I decided long ago that if I was going to be led by anyone, it would be Jesus. I wanted to be sure that I was following what God wanted me to be doing. I made a conscious decision that Jesus was going to be my master. I was not going to be led blindly around.

How Do I Know I Am Following Jesus?

But how do I know that it is Jesus I am following and not some other spirit? Is there a way to tell the difference?

In Matt. 10, Jesus was confronted by some Pharisees. A man had just confessed that he believed that Jesus was God. The Pharisees said that they couldn’t see it. The Jesus said in Matt. 10:3-4, “The watchman opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.” (NIV) Jesus was trying to tell them that if they were one of His followers, they would recognize who He was.

But the Pharisees did not understand what He was saying. So Jesus said in John 10:9 “I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. (NIV)  Then He followed this in verse 14, “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me.” (NIV)
