There has been much discussion concerning whether Babylon will be rebuilt or not. Tim LaHaye & Jerry B. Jenkins wrote a book entitled “Are We Living In The End Times?” In it, they state that Babylon will be rebuilt and state the reasons why. Let’s look at them.
Babylon Will Be Overthrown Twice
Isaiah 13 and 14 and Jeremiah 50 and 51 both describe the destruction of Babylon. A careful study of these four chapters reveal that there will be two overthrows of Babylon. The first occurred in the seventieth year of Israel’s captivity. The second will occur during the seven year Tribulation. During the Tribulation, Babylon will be the headquarters of the world’s government, commercial and religious systems.
The second time will not be like the first because Rev. 18:8 (NIV) says: Therefore in one day her plagues will overtake her: death, mourning and famine. She will be consumed by fire, for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.” This did not happen when it was overthrown the first time.
The Ruins of Babylon Have Been Used To Build Other Cities
This is contrary to Jeremiah 51:26 (NIV): “’No rock will be taken from you for a cornerstone, nor any stone for a foundation, for you will be desolate forever,’ declares the Lord.”
There have been at least six other cities that bear the marks of ancient Babylon in their buildings: Selecucia, built by the Greeks; Ctesiphon, by the Parthians; Allmaiden, by the Persians; Kufa, by the Caliphs and Hillah, just a 20 minute walk from ancient Babylon. Bagdad, fifty miles north of Babylon also used materials from the ancient city.
This is certainly contrary to what is recorded in Rev. 18. There it is recorded that it will be consumed by fire and even thrown into the sea. In other words, there will be nothing left to build another city from.
Babylon Will Be Suddenly and Totally Obliterated
Isaiah 13:19 (NIV) says: “Babylon, the jewel of kingdoms, the glory of the Babylonians’ pride, will be overthrown by God like Sodom and Gomorrah.” Sodom and Gomorrah were suddenly destroyed with fire and brimstone. This has not happened yet.
However, Tim LaHaye reports that there is a bed of asphalt only ten feet below the surface of the earth where Babylon is being rebuilt. Thus, God could easily use this to destroy Babylon as He predicts in Revelation.
Babylon Will Never Be Inhabited Again.
Isaiah 13:20 (NIV) says the following about Babylon: “She will never be inhabited or lived in through all generations; no Arab will pitch his tent there, no shepherd will rest his flocks there.” In the past, Arabs have pitched their tents there and headed their sheep there.
Jeremiah 51:43 (NIV) says: “Her towns will be desolate, a dry and desert land, a land where no one lives, through which no man travels.” This certainly has not happened. Throughout history the site has been surrounded by fertile lands and these days, visitors pass through there on a regular basis.
An Event Mentioned Twice Will Happen Twice
An ancient rabbinic rule of interpretation says that when the Bible mentions an event twice, it means that the event will happen twice. If this is true, then we know that Babylon will be rebuilt. Look at the following verses.
Isaiah 21:9 (NIV) “Babylon has fallen, has fallen! All the images of its gods lie shattered on the ground!”
Rev. 14:8 (NIV) “A second angel followed and said, ‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great, which made all the nations drink the maddening wine of her adulteries.’”
Rev. 18:2 (NIV) “Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great! She has become a home for demons and a haunt for every evil spirit, a haunt for every unclean and detestable bird.”
Notice that each time “fallen” is repeated twice. According to the rabbinic rule, this means that each of these events will occur twice.
Babylon Is Already Being Rebuilt
If you read my article on The Importance Of Babylon, you already know that Babylon must be built again. In fact, it is already being rebuilt. It was begun by Saddam Hussein and the building is continuing, even after his death.
