Will Russia Attack Israel?

Is Russia mentioned in the Bible? And if so, will Russia attack Israel? This has been the discussion of many prophecy writers.

Ezekiel 38 and 39 Says Yes!

Ezekiel 38 and 39 are among the most specific and easy to understand prophecies in the prophetic word. Be sure to note that these chapters immediately follow chapter 37 which is a prophecy concerning the gradual gathering of Israel back to their own country.

Notice also that Ezekiel 38:8 (NIV) says: “After many days you will be called to arms. In future years you will invade a land that has recovered from war, whose people were gathered from many nations to the mountains of Israel, which had long been desolate. They had been brought out from the nations, and now all of them live in safety.”

So, sometime after Israel becomes a nation again, this army will attack Israel. Who is this army that will come against Israel? The Bible calls them Gog and Magog.

Who Are Gog and Magog?

Etymologically (the study of the origins of words), the Gog and Magog of Ezekiel 38 and 39 can only mean modern-day Russia. I know, Russia does not seem to be in any position to attack anyone right now. But study the following:

Magog was the second son of Japheth, who was the third son of Noah (Gen. 10:1-2). And According to Josephus, the great historian, Magog settled north of the Black Sea. And Tubal and Meshech were the fifth and sixth sons of Japheth, whose descendants settled south of the Black Sea.

Also notice what Ezekiel 39:1-2 (NIV) says: “Son of man, prophesy against Gog and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, O Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal. I will turn you around and drag you along. I will bring you from the far north and send you against the mountains of Israel.’”

Gog Is Russia

Directions in the Bible are always given in relation to Israel. What country is to the “far north” of Israel? Russia. This is why almost all prophecy scholars identify Russia as the country that will fulfill the prophet Ezekiel’s warning for the last days.

An even more remarkable fact is that Gog’s allies – Persia, Libya, Gomer (thought to be Turkey) and Ethiopia– are all Arab Muslim countries today and they “just happen” to be Russia’s faithful allies.

And they all hate Israel. It is also common knowledge that 55 million of Russia’s own 250 million people are Arabs.

Who Will Help Israel?

It is interesting that Ezekiel 38:13 seems to indicate that the allies of Israel will not help Israel when this attack comes. They will only question what Russia and her allies are doing. Russia seems to be free to do whatever she wants with Israel.

Isaiah 38:14-16 says that Russia, along with her allies will attack Israel “like a cloud that covers the land.” It will look like they are completely dominating Israel. Verse 17 quotes God as saying that this is what His servants the prophets said would happen.

God Steps In

However, Isaiah 38:18-23 says that God, Himself, will step in and defeat Russia and her allies. First He will cause a great earthquake to happen. Then He will cause the armies to turn against each other and began attacking each other. Finally, He will cause torrents of rain, hailstones and burning sulfur to rain down on Russia and her allies. They will be completely destroyed.

When Will This Happen?

Scholars have been predicting for 10-15 years that this attack is imminent. These are not just Biblical Scholars, but scholars who study the politics of the world. They are convinced that the peace talks will not succeed and that Israel’s enemies will try to destroy her by force.

And how could Russia accomplish this? They have lost the power they used to have. Their army has been devastated. And it never was that powerful to begin with. But, remember, when God says that something will happen, it will happen.

Peace talks are still going on, but they are not making very much progress. The Middle East is a ticking time bomb. When it will go off is anybody’s guess. But many are convinced that it will be soon. And I am one of those.

No, it does not seem possible that anyone would dare to attack Israel. They are too well armed and they have never been defeated since they became a nation again. However, God said that it will happen. So, no matter how far fetched it may seem, it will happen.

Keep your eye on the Middle East and especially on Israel. What happens there will affect the whole world. And when this attack comes, the Second Coming is not far off.
